Notable Box Office Stories:

  • Deadpool 2 - Don't worry everyone, I know I'm DEEPLY unfunny so no Deadpool meme humor from me, I'll leave that to the professionals who seemed to have done another bang-up job as Deadpool 2 opened very well at #1 with $125M domestic. That makes it the second highest R-rated opening weekend behind the first Deadpool film. It was a rather interesting weekend as the film seemed poised to take the R-rated opening crown as it had the best opening day for an R-rated film with $53.3M far topping the $47.3M set by Deadpool and the former record holder IT with $50.4M. But Deadpool had a 10.2% drop on its Saturday and a 0.2% rise on Sunday while Deadpool 2 had a 24% drop Saturday and a 23% drop Sunday which meant by the end of the weekend it was playing second fiddle. At very least the incredible Sunday performance for Deadpool could be chalked up to that film being released on a holiday weekend but still the Saturday drop shows that Deadpool 2 just doesn't quite have the slight edge of excitement and newness that came with the original. All that is just fun discussion white noise because the film is doing insanely well, though remember Deadpool 2 carries a budget almost twice as big as Deadpool with $110M. Also remember that is insanely small in comparison with many superhero films, in fact the cheapest superhero film since Logan.

  • Deadpool 2 (cont.)- Where the film did better than Deadpool was in its worldwide opening where it made $301M, a $40M improvement on the previous film's worldwide opening. That's also a bigger worldwide opening than every previous Fox film including X-Men: Days of Future Past which opened to $174M and had the added bonus of opening in China. Deadpool didn't open in China until last year and Deadpool 2 doesn't have a release date there yet. Deadpool 2 may only get an R-rating here but abroad it's very different country to country so a strong international pull is key for it to make up ground outside of countries it can't open in or will be forced to open with a heavily censored cut. The reviews for the film are in almost lockstep with the previous film and it scored the exact same Cinemascore with an excellent A rating which should help it stand out against the now less comedic and more serious in tone Solo. It will be interesting to see if any of that hesitancy we saw in Saturday and Sunday drops translates to the film's overall performance but Deadpool fans need not worry. The film is already a success and I certainly don't think we are done with the merc with the mouth. Now off to write my Deadpool x Colossus slashfic.

  • Book Club - While Film Twitter went weirdly wild for Book Club audiences were a little more tepid as the film opened to #3 with $12.5M. The film was a clear attempt to focus on the older crowd who feel left out during the main summer months when most wide releases are tentpole movies. The film has a great main cast of four older women (Diane Keaton, Jane Fonda, Candice Bergen, and Mary Steenburgen) as well as a story focused on Fifty Shades of Grey fandom, a book series that was extremely popular with older women. The efforts to laser focus that market definitely worked as 80% of the audience female, 88% were over 35, and 60% were over the age of 50. The film also scored an A- on Cinemascore so it should play well as a low top 5 earner for a few weeks. Side note, I think it's kind of interesting this film was made by Paramount but the 50 Shades series is owned by Universal. I don't have more to say really, just thought it was odd.

  • Show Dogs - I try not to be too personal on these things. My opinions of a film shouldn't affect whether I think they are a success or failure. That said I am so happy that this film, who's trailer made me miserable before I saw the unbelievably lovely Paddington 2, is a huge bomb opening at #6 with $6M. That is not only the worst opening for the auteur Raja Gosnell (The Smurfs, Scooby-Doo, Beverly Hills Chihuahua) since his 1997 film Home Alone 3 but it's also the 13th worst opening in super wide release (3,000+ theaters). The film starring Will Arnett and a bunch of voice over performances from celebs who really want a new pool had no family competition and was coming out the week an R-rated comic book movie and a movie about older woman getting busy. It had room is what I'm saying. The film is notably a holdover from the now defunct Open Road which has merged with IM Global to become Global Road (which is also coincidentally my favorite Sting album), so it wasn't really a main priority for them as they prepare for Hotel Artemis' release in June. Alright done with write-up, now time for 5 more showings of Paddington 2.
