Notable Box Office Stories:

  • Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom - You know a franchise has serious box office power when a $150M premiere and $700M worldwide in three weeks is considered a down-step, as Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom barreled into US with a #1 spot this weekend. The original Jurassic World was one of the first films to prove just how powerful long in gestation nostalgic properties can be opening far above expectations to a then record breaking $208M three years ago. The film was a monster box office behemoth that far exceeded expectations and was a huge worldwide hit. As such Fallen Kingdom is in a very odd position where it is already a massive success yet factually it is underperforming from the first with a $55M+ lower opening. But again this is a big debut, in the top 25 of all time. In fact this is the first time since 2007 that a film has premiered over $100M after the previous week's premiere also hit $100M+. So while its box office take is lower in many ways, the film is performing like a major hit, just not a once in a lifetime one. What a tragedy right? Overseas the film continues to do quite well, opening this week in Mexico ($12.3M), Brazil ($9.2M) and Australia ($7.9M). However the big dog in the race is still China where the film continues a massive run, making over $200M in the country in just two weeks. Already this is the third highest grossing worldwide release of 2018 and the film is in the top 100 highest grossing films worldwide of all time.
  • Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom (cont.) - Looking forward domestically it will be interesting to see how Fallen Kingdom compares to Jurassic World's incredible 3.12x multiplier that put it well over $600M domestic by the end of its run. It's possible for Fallen Kingdom to have a similar run but it has some competition in two weeks with Ant-Man and the Wasp. The previous entry in that franchise was not a major MCU hit but the film is coming on the heels of the massive Infinity War so it could have a lot of residual heat because of that. With an A- on Cinemascore the Fallen Kingdom's chances look solid but it could end up grossing half of Jurassic World with $300M domestic. But again think about context here. Even if the film makes that domestically it will still be a $170M film that grossed over $1B worldwide. It may not be to the heights of the 2015 film but that honestly shows how insanely popular that film was. Jurassic World may have been a fluke but it was a fluke that was so successful that an "underperforming" sequel is one of the biggest films of the year that proves this is one of the most lucrative and powerful film franchises around.
  • Incredibles 2 - This week it looked like we could potentially have our first ever weekend with two $100M+ grossers but alas Incredibles 2 had a steeper drop than expected as it came in #2 with $80.9M, a drop of 55.7%. That's a far worse drop than the past two Pixar films that opened over $100M: Toy Story 3 (-46.2%) and Finding Dory (-46.0%). In fact it's the exact same drop as last year's Pixar under-performer Cars 3. However with such a huge opening and great daily holds the film is now over $350M domestic, making it the 4th highest grossing Pixar film and the 10th highest grossing animated film in just 2 weeks. It's likely the weekend drop showcases just how much the nostalgic adult audience drove the first weekend who then moved on to Fallen Kingdom this weekend. It will be interesting to see the film's holds in the coming weeks but as of now even a disappointing weekend hold is just a minor blip in a major domestic box office run.
  • Lobster Cop - The film Lobster Cop premiered to $35K on 12 theaters, a per theater average of $2,917. This isn't really important box office news, I just want you to know there's a movie called Lobster Cop.
