What makes the jump scare from Signs so damn effective?

I’m sure most of you know, but I am referring to this scene.

I’ve never had a jump scare that absolutely send a jolt of fear through my whole body. Actually, instead of “jumping” the scare actually made me freeze up.

But still to this day, no matter how many times I’ve seen this scene, it has a similar effect. Why is this scare so effective and flat out horrifying/disturbing?
