'The Ritual' is worth the watch if you like horror movies.
I have heard next to nothing about this film and I was pleasantly surprised by it. If you didn't know the movie is about a group of friends who take a hiking trip through the wilderness of Sweden as a tribute to their friend who was murdered in a robbery. Along the way they begin to slowly lose their minds as they are hunted and tormented by a creature in the woods.
I think this film was pretty effective on pretty much every level. I think the look and shots of the movie were pretty good. They really nailed making the forest imposing and creepy but beautiful at the same time. The struggle of the main character and dealing with his role in his friends death and how it unfolded during the trip was a nice foundation to build the rest of the movie on. I wish some of the other guys in the group were a little more fleshed out though
I think some people might be turned off by the last half of the movie but I loved every second of it. The creature design was so fucking cool and for the first time in a long time we have a movie monster that was deeply unsettling to me.
I believe the movie got released in Britain for a little bit and then it was put on Netflix not long after. I actually think Netflix is bad for movies in regards to building buzz and word of mouth. I feel like if this was a theater release here in the states than this movie would be talked about a little more than it is. It feels like unless the Netflix film is getting award buzz they just kinda fall off the map which is unfortunate. It's a bummer but that's another discussion. If you are looking for a movie that's a little creepy and you have Netflix I highly recommend this film
