What's your biggest sequel letdown experience?
I noticed both of the Descent horror movies were on Netflix, and I'd never seen them so I decided to watch them both. While I think it's cool that the sequel picks up immediately after the first, I can't think of a bigger dropoff in quality from Pt. 1 to Pt. 2 from any other movies I've ever seen.
The first one is great. It builds tension slowly, it's filmed in a way that captures the terror of the setting, and there are great character moments throughout. If you've never seen it, I highly recommend it. Great horror film I don't wish to spoil here.
The Descent Part II has none of this. It starts with a horrible amnesia contrivance in the beginning, and things just get even worse from there. None of the characters are likable in the way they are in the first movie (even the characters that return are now kind of unlikable), and they are constantly making irrational decisions and are not developed in a coherent manner. Way more lighting is used in the movie, removing the dread from the dark cave scenes of the first. One character from the first comes back (which you see coming), but this remarkably implausible scenario is never adequately explained in the film. The creatures get way more screen time, and thus become less intimidating as you continue to watch. The dialog exchanges are poorly directed and thus not believable. The ending is a bizarre turn that left me very unsatisfied.
All-in-all, Descent 2 is just a flat-out bad horror film and it's pretty stark in comparison to the quality of the first. I expected it to be worse given the change in director, but I honestly didn't anticipate to dislike it so much. I've never had such a stark like-to-dislike experience from a movie to its sequel before.
