Notable Box Office Stories:
- Crazy Rich Asians - It seems like Crazy Rich Asians is just going to keep making $20M+ every weekend until the heat death of the universe as once again the film had a fantastic weekend hold at #1 with $22.2M, a drop of just 10.4%. The film has now passed $100M domestic, making it the first romantic comedy to do so since 2015's Trainwreck. Overseas the film's rollout continues to be slow, as it's grossed just $20M so far in 17 territories and hasn't opened in any major Asian markets yet like China, Japan, and South Korea but it has grossed $4.6M in Singapore and $1.5M in the Philippines so far. The film's incredible run now puts it in the top 25 highest grossing romantic comedies in just 3 weeks and with a boost from Labor Day today could put it higher. Also most hit romantic comedies top out at around $115M so the fact CRA will easily surpass that number means it could easily creep into the top 10 or top 5. If we are looking at the highest heights it's very possible for CRA to become only the second rom com ever to surpass $200M domestic (My Big Fat Greek Wedding holds that record and the top spot with $241.4M). Now that CRA has easily passed $100M domestic it's a good reminder not only that films with Asian-American leads can be a cross-cultural hit, but that news of the death of the rom com were premature. With Netflix now poised to lap up the market that Hollywood left behind (CRA was notably in a bidding war with Netflix and Warner Bros) maybe it's time Hollywood remembers that when they make rom coms with actual intent and skill people actually do really want to see them.
- Operation Finale - Oh the perils of failed Oscar Bait, how little people care when there's no heat. Such is the case for Operation Finale which opened to a pretty weak $6M at #4. The film about the true story of Israeli special agents capturing Adolf Eichmann, one of the main architects of the Holocaust, in order to bring him to trial is certainly the kind of real life high brow drama that should easily score at least some acting noms for some ACTING screaming matches. However in an age where the Oscars are finally starting to reward stranger and more independent fare like Shape of Water and Moonlight it takes a real hook and some very good reviews to make a film like this standout now and Operation Finale just doesn't have either. The good news is with a relatively middle level budget of $24M and a good spread out release (it opened on Wednesday and is looking to earn about $10M by the end of Labor Day) it should be fine. However, in the grand scheme of 2018 it's a blip.
- Searching - The latest in the "modern technology be spooky yo" trend expanded from limited to somewhat wide this week as Searching opened in 1,207 theaters to $5.7M. While not the best expansion it's still pretty solid carrying a per theater average of $4.7K. The film starring John Cho as a father looking for his missing kid via the internets was directed by Aneesh Chaganty who became famous online after he made a popular film shot entirely on Google Glass which lead to a job in house with the company. That kind of savvy tech driven filmmaking is something that we'll likely be seeing a lot of in the future, but films like Hardcore Henry have shown that jump from viral sensation to actual money making is tough. The interesting thing is despite this being a premise that would likely skew younger, the film actually had an audience that was 61% over the age of 25 and could appeal more to parents worried about their kids online lives than kids wondering about their own impacts. So perhaps that angle will keep the film going if it expands any further, which it could. Also when was the last time two films with Asian-American leads were in the top 5 together? Kinda neat.
- Kin - You know when a film like Kin, with its splashy stars and big buyout two years ago, opens to reviews that bad and bombs at #12 to $3M I think maybe selling these terrible films to Netflix to bury them isn't such a bad idea. The film based on the short Bag Man by Jonathan Baker and Josh Baker (who direct the feature as well) was a big hit at SXSW in 2015 and was immediately bought up by Lionsgate for a major $30M deal with James Franco attached to star and Shawn Levy (Stranger Things, Arrival) set to produce. The film then was quietly made and even more quietly released when Lionsgate likely saw what a bomb they had on their hands.
