What the heck is up with the whole "car keys in the sun visor" thing? Do people actually do this?

I watched the Netflix B-movie The Babysitter over the weekend -- I enjoyed it, but one viewing is enough, except for the kissing scene which was awesome -- and they used that darn trope in there. In a movie released in 2017.

What gives? I know The Babysitter is a campy movie, but they also did it in the 10 Cloverfield Lane.
