The Prince of Egypt gets better as you grow older.
As a kid, I used to watch The Prince of Egypt frequently on VHS. It's a really, really good movie. I don't consider myself religious, but there are plenty of opportunities to make a good movie from the bible.
Another movie that I used to watch frequently was The Ten Commandments. Again, another great movie from the golden age of Hollywood. But if I'm being honest, I think The Prince of Egypt does a better job.
First of all... Rewatching the hieroglyphical sequence as an adult was fantastic. Shit, I wish people were putting stuff like that out today. The movie is just a fucking visual masterpiece. The music? Fucking great. Jeff Goldblum? You have my attention. Great cast.
Another thing I enjoyed about it was the relationship between Ramses and Moses. Yul Brynner and Charlton Heston did a great playing the leading roles in The Ten Commandments, but their interactions was purely bitter and driven by defiance for each other. And it gives the movie an interesting antagonist, but the tone in Brynner's performance makes it hard to connect with him. I understand that both movies are really different, but nothing about Ramses in this movie made me care for him as a human. And I understand that Moses changed after seeing God, but holy fuck, he's like a fucking robot throughout the second half of the movie.
And what I like about TPOE is how both characters felt human. Ramses, a product of his father's strict parenting, is burdened with the responsibility of ruling Egypt. And when Ramses and Moses reunite, Ramses embraces his brother and welcomes him with pure love, only to turn hostile the very next moment when the future of Egypt (powered through slave labor) is threatened. And this makes the conflict in the movie a lot more interesting. Moses isn't simply going against another antagonist, he's going against somebody he still has love for. The same could be said about Ramses, and its tragic to watch their loving relationship crumble.
Dreamworks, what the hell happened?
