Would Disney even have cast Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man? (thought exercise)

Think about it. Favreau had to fight his Marvel producers tooth and nail to make that happen. They absolutely didn't want Downey. https://www.cinemablend.com/new/Jon-Favreau-Details-His-Fight-With-Marvel-Studios-Cast-Robert-Downey-Jr-Iron-Man-43293.html

Despite years and years of putting on fantastic performances in great films, the star was much better known for his drug and alcohol habits and as a result was considered by many in the studio system to be an extreme risk. Despite Downey Jr. cleaning up his act, this behavior continued all the way up until Marvel Studios began carving out plans for their Marvel Cinematic Universe - which is why Jon Favreau really had to go to bat for him in the casting process for Iron Man.

Now imagine, with Disney being a company that insists far more on its actors maintaining a squeaky-clean public image, how impossible this task would have been if Disney had owned Marvel Studios from the beginning.

It's difficult to overestimate how central Downey was to that movie's success, or to overestimate how central that movie's success was to Marvel movies and to Marvel Studios itself. These dominos don't fall into place without all that serendipity at the very start.

So we end up with the ironic thought: Disney's own practices and nature would very possibly have prevented the creation of the company that Disney eventually took over.
