What character gets killed and the "magic/appeal" of the movie just goes down

So I just watched the Sherlock Holmes movies for the first time, first one was really good and I really like the dynamic between RDJ Holmes and Rachel McAdams character, they had great chemistry and the will they, won't they stuff was awesome and made the movie even more funny

So, when they decided to kill her character in the first act of the 2nd movie, the magic of the movie just disappeared for me. Also the new female character did not even make things better....so bland. Definitely a mistake killing the character, should have left McAdams out of the sequel altogether if they did not have something good for her to do.

What other character affected a movie in a big way after they were killed off?
