Ridley Scott's "Legend" (1985): Dreamy cinematography, Tangerine Dream score, Tim Curry as the Lord of Darkness and Unicorns. Audiences weren't ready for it.

I genuinely think "Legend" was too ambitious. It wasn't a conventional Fantasy movie in that it was more ethereal and tried to convey and the dreaminess, the otherworldly nature of Fantasy and the amorality of a fairy tale.

You don't get cutesy elves or happy go lucky fairies. You get horrifying goblins which will give you nightmares, princesses who are morally ambiguous and the terrifying Lord of Darkness. All I have to say is Tim Curry in full red make-up and gigantic horns is a sight you won't forget. I used to be scared to death of him when I was a kid.

This was before Tom Cruise became a big star so his ego didn't override the whole movie. He was effective and charismatic but also had a flawed character and I loved Mia Sara as the Princess who becomes more and more unstable as she's captured and becomes tempted by the darkness.

The best way to describe Legend is Neil Gaiman on acid. It's such a bizarre but mesmerizing movie and I can see why it flopped. It might have been too dark for audiences.
