Rewatched 'Contact', and it's still great, but it really should have been called 'Everyone Is A Dick to Ellie Arroway For 2.5 Hours'

I mean, seriously. I noticed it when I watched it the first time, but seeing it again... fully 95% of the movie's characters mistreat, override, undervalue, or generally behave like a dick to Ellie Arroway, our heroine.

The movie has a lot to say about faith, science, and belief... but I think it has just as much to say about sexism and how female scientists are treated. Watching Dr. Drumlin literally cut off Ellie in the middle of a sentence so he can say the exact same sentence himself is maddening. And the White House (represented by a nameless female chief of staff and NSA guy Michael Kitz) is hardly much better, allowing and encouraging Drumlin to undercut her at every point. The fact that Palmer Joss, the theologian, is in all-night strategy meetings with the President and she's waiting outside in the hall is ridiculous.
