‘Zombieland: Double Tap’ Review Thread
Rotten Tomatoes: 75% (40 critics) with a 6.35 average rating
Critics consensus: Zombieland: Double Tap makes up for a lack of fresh brains with an enjoyable reunion that recaptures the spirit of the original and adds a few fun twists.
Metacritic: 55/100 (15 critics)
The scores will change as time passes. Meanwhile, I’ll post some short reviews.
For some audiences, that may be enough to get their fix: “Zombieland: Double Tap” still finds space for big laughs (the pairing of Eisenberg and Harrelson remains nutty and fun), a welcome cameo in the credits, and a banger of a final battle in which the body count soars to ridiculous numbers. But, after 10 years of anticipation, it would have been nice to see a zombie movie with more on its mind than the same goofy undead routine.
For all the flying intestines and skulls that split open like past-due melons, Double Tap has another squishy organ at its center: a big, goofball heart.
-Leah Greenblatt, Entertainment Weekly: B
Zombieland: Double Tap is a riot, and a lot of that is due to Zoey Deutch and her character, Madison. While it doesn’t quite achieve classic status in its own right, when it comes to sequels that do the original film justice, it is up there. It’s worth the wait, your time and your money.
-Simon Thompson, IGN: 8.0 “great”
Most importantly, “Zombieland: Double Tap” continues the original’s cheeky tone and irreverent humor, while it also acknowledges that it’s a series a little out of place and time with the current political age. But if all you’re looking for is “Shaun of the Dead,” but American, then this is the movie for you.
Sometimes they come back. Sometimes they shouldn’t bother. Sometimes they’re pretty darned decent — although this is purely one for fans of the original.
-Chris Hewitt, Empire: 3/5
Though it coasts on some wildly uneven star charisma, there’s nothing particularly objectionable about Double Tap, finally. It’s fine? It’s just a time-killer we didn’t much need, a decade after we hardly needed the first one.
-Tim Robey, The Telegraph: 2/5
Rounding up all the original's stars and throwing several more surviving human characters into the mix, the pic is plenty entertaining for those of us who, paradoxically, find zombies comforting in dark times.
-John DeFore, The Hollywood Reporter
Gore and guffaws go hand in weapon-wielding hand in a belated follow-up that struggles to replicate the original’s winning formula.
-Neil Smith, Total Film: 3/5
