"Bowfinger" is among Steve Martin's and Eddie Murphy's best.
Just saw this movie and was quite impressed. Martin (who also wrote the script) plays an aspiring filmmaker that decides to make the movie of his dreams "Chubby Rain" with very little money and promises to feature the hottest action star Kit Ramsey (Murphy). But since Kit refuses to do the film, Bowfinger decides to have his way by secretly filming him without him noticing while filling in the rest of his scenes with a stunt double (also Murphy).
Basically, this is a high-concept comedy with quite a few jabs at Hollywood and some inside jokes ("Did you know Tom Cruise had no idea he was in that vampire movie until two years later?"), a sort of passion project for Martin. And I think it plays well to both stars' strengths. I am not that big a fan of Steve Martin as a leading man, preferring him in roles when he steals scenes whether he be the main character (Planes, Trains, and Automobiles) or a mere cameo (The Muppets Movie). But here his style of humour just works. Probably because it plays into the ridiculousness of the plot so well, where he has to constantly come up with crazy ways to keep his con going. As for Eddie Murphy, the way he plays his two characters with such stark contrast is thoroughly impressive and fun to watch.
I would call it a pretty underrated comedy to be honest. Anyone else enjoy this one?
