Cool thing I noticed in “Marriage Story”

In one of the most heartbreaking scenes of the movie, Adam Driver sings “Being Alive” from the Stephen Sondheim musical “Company”. It’s a song about realizing what makes a relationship special and accepting how deeply you want someone to make you feel complete. Adam Driver feels all of those things over the course of the song and his face shows it.

It’s even more heartbreaking once you notice that his character references lyrics from the songs during the argument scene with Scarlett Johansson in the apartment.

“You put me through hell” = ♫ Somebody pull me up short and put me through hell and give me support for being alive ♫

“You always made me aware” = ♫ Somebody sit in my chair and ruin my sleep and make me aware of being alive ♫

“You used me” = ♫ Let me be used ♫

“...how I was falling short” = ♫ Somebody pull me up short and put me through hell and give me support for being alive ♫

Brilliant screenwriting.
