Does Kevin’s family ever find out about the burglary that takes place in Home Alone?

This is an ongoing debate with my girlfriend. She’s convinced that Kevin never tells them and the family is still unaware of what actually happened while he was left behind in Chicago. This is supported by their harsh treatment of Kevin at the beginning of Home Alone 2.

I, on the other hand, am pretty convinced that they know all about it. It’s hard to believe their next door neighbor wouldn’t have told them about using a shovel to save their kid From his would-be-murderers. Also, their other neighbors just had their houses flooded beyond repair. And they do (presumably) read the newspaper.

Please settle this debate for me!
