Message of Cabin in the Woods: Fuck Off producers.
The first time I saw Cabin in the Woods I didn’t think too much into it besides being a really fun movie with a million references and a pretty mind blowing final act. The 2nd time I found myself seeing a message that was basically decrying how terrible the horror genre, specially slashers have gotten.
I think the film believes that horror stories are worth telling. But producers (downstairs operators) try to contain and force them into being derivative plots of hot young people acting dumb getting killed off one by one. The gas they pump into the college kids that makes act like dumb stereotypes is like the producer forcing writer to add a stupid contrived change just so it sticks to the same basic formula.
I don’t know how obvious this message is or if I’m totally off base and nobody else sees it but it definitely made me feel more invested in the film as watched the film critique it’s own genre in such a literal way. I feel like some of the conversations between the operators could be the same conversations that soulless movie producers just looking to tick off the conventions check boxes would have.
With Marty saying that maybe humanity’s time is up, i think he’s also talking about slasher films. They really have to bring something new to the table now to stand out.
