Movies with great but bittersweet endings
What movies have great endings that are bittersweet?
Personally, I think Roman Holiday (1953) is a really good example. It’s a romantic comedy that stars Audrey Hepburn and Gregory Peck. Most of the film is light-hearted and joyful, but the ending leaves it on a slightly sad note. And I think the film really benefits from having ended this way. Not to mention it’s so well-executed in that it keeps the audience hoping for the prospect of a happy ending only for the film to stick to a more realistic one instead, which actually makes it sting even more. I think it takes artistic courage on the filmmaker’s part to end a romantic comedy like that.
