Wow, I forgot how great Peter Jackson's King Kong is.

I was watching some movie clips with my son, and I picked a few from the 2005 King Kong by Peter Jackson. I saw it in the theater and I remember having mixed feelings, but WOW, upon rewatching some of the key scenes I'm completely floored. This movie is so impressively directed and realized. I get that this T-Rex fight scene is right out of Indiana Jones' playbook (and, by association, all the serials that influenced both King Kong and Indiana Jones), but it's very creative and fun. And I think the insect pit is everything--a perfect example of modern technique being used to improve upon earlier content. The performances are solid, the visuals are great. While it was a financial success, I don't remember it being a big critical smash--what do you all think? I think it's everything I love about old claymation monster movies plus modern movie fun.
