The Ring (2002) is a modern horror classic

I thought it was a surprisingly refreshing take on the genre, especially compared to all those movies that are full of cheap jump scares. The Ring does not rely on jump scares, but builds tension and creepiness through the fear of the unknown, the greendark rainy atmosphere and some incredibly scary images (the scene with the girl crawling out of the television is going to stay with me for a looong time).

There are a lot of 'silent' moments and there's a lot of slow build-up, and I admire the movie for that. It doesn't need action or in your face jump scares to be scary, instead it slowly creeps under your skin.

The ending is somewhat lackluster, but all in all The Ring really belongs to the top tier of horror movies, imo.
