While flawed, Ad Astra is exactly the type of sci-fi I want to see more of
Finally got around to watching this movie and overall I thought it was great. My biggest criticism is the stupidity of the astronauts attempting to subdue Roy when he infiltrates their ship during take off. These are the kind of dumb character decisions that serve the plot, but not the characters; everyone of them should have known better than to do that. I also found the ending fumbled, I would've much preferred something more ambiguous, or realistic given the gravity of the plot. But overall, the art direction and cinematography were fantastic, and while it stumbles occasionally, I loved the pacing.
James Gray really managed to flesh out this version of the future that is, for the most part, very grounded and believable. I regret not seeing it in theatres because it's a visually stunning movie.
Ultimately, I wanna see more character driven, ambitious sci fi like this that is not rooted in action and adventure.
