Every October I feel it is my duty to remind people that the movie Chasing Sleep exists and it is guaranteed to be the best horror movie you’ve never heard of.

Jeff Daniels plays a pill-popping college professor that slowly loses his grasp on reality over the course of a few days while he deals with the disappearance of his wife.

The film is nightmarish in a way that I’ve only ever been able to compare to stylistic and visual choices David Lynch would make. There are some EXTREMELY disturbing scenes in this film. The imagery and sound design are absolutely brilliant and are married to the atmosphere in such a cohesive way.

The movie plays out almost like a stage play as there are limited characters and it takes place entirely inside a single house. When it comes to the acting the performance of Jeff Daniels might actually be the best of his career. Watching him spiral out of control while seeing how tired, exhausted and confused he is by the whole situation is so visceral and unnerving. Some stellar special effects too.

Chasing Sleep is an underrated and unseen psychological horror film starring Jeff Daniels that deserves to be seen.
