Nicolas Cage has been in some bad films, but they would have been worse without him

Here's the main topic of discussion: Is Nicolas Cage a bad actor? Or is he just in a lot of bad movies?

Nic is a controversial actor. Some people think he's the worst actor, while others, including myself, think he's a great actor (more on that in a bit).

I've seen a lot of Nicolas Cage movies. I've enjoyed lots of them (The Rock, Face/Off, Con Air, National Treasure films), but one of the "bad" ones made me realize it wasn't bad because of Nic, and it most certainly would have been worse without him. Primal is something you'd expect to see as a Cable TV film where Nic stars as an exotic animal poacher stuck on a ship with a deadly assassin. I didn't hate the film, but I think I would have if it didn't star Cage.

I think Cage's strongest asset as an actor is his versatility; I can't think of any other actor who has the range Cage has. Not even two time Academy Award winning actor Tom Hanks has the range of Cage. Nic can literally play any role convincingly: Comedy, action villain, action hero, romantic lead, soldier, rescue worker, super hero, braniac treasure hunter, fantasy swordsman, etc. Tom Hanks may have been a romantic lead, soldier, and braniac treasure hunter, but he's never been a fantasy swordsman, a super hero, or a particularly evil antagonist (The Ladykillers and Road to Perdition are like the closest, and even in those he was likeable).

tl, dr:I honestly think that Nic adds to any movie he's in. He can't save a bad film from being bad, but what actor can? And if an actor can add to any film he's in, doesn't that make him a good actor?
