MovieModsRecommend - Everything is Illuminated

We mods are in this subreddit daily and know the users feel like the same movies are talked about way too often. The most popular movies on Reddit are certainly some great ones, but every week we're going to recommend what we think are good movies and aren't discussed much in this subreddit. These recommendations aren't all pretentious film school meditations on human verisimilitude, we swear they're watchable :)

December 27, 2020 is Everything is Illuminated - 2005. All of the trailers for it are terrible, so here's a fan-edited montage of what it's like. Avoid trailers, they're absolute garbage.

The basic premise: A young Jewish American (Elijah Wood) endeavors to find the woman who saved his grandfather during World War II in a Ukrainian village, that was ultimately razed by the Nazis, with the help of an eccentric local.

It's the movie version of the semi-true best selling novel of the same name. And let me preface all of this by saying no, this isn't an esoteric quirky foreign film that only snobs like. It's legit funny and accessible, directed by Sabertooth himself - Liev Schreiber. Schreiber is of Ukrainian descent and speaks Russian fluently, is a trained Shakespearean stage actor, and spends most of his acting career being tough guys. Just an awesome mix, in my opinion.

But I digress - Everything is Illuminated is in English more than Inglorious Basterds is, in case the idea of subtitles terrifies you. The movie basically gives you a tour of rural Ukraine through Elijah Wood's funny translator Alex. If any of you ever had a foreign friend (as in recently immigrated and started learning English) you'll find a lot of humor in some of the mis-translations. Like instead of asking "Are you close with your father?" Alex asks "Are you very proximal with your father?" and how "Many girls want to be carnal with me because I am such premium dancer." The dog is a "Seeing-Eye Bitch," etc etc. It's great.

In addition to the comedy, and it being interesting to run around Ukraine - the movie has an actual good story with some legit heavy moments.

Tangentially related: The soundtrack of folk/accordion music is mostly done by a Russian group called Leningrad, who also make some crazy club/dance music. Here's one of my favorite music videos of all time, directed by the same guy who directed Hardcore Henry. There's also this incredible one.

Please use spoiler tags in the discussion below, as this is a recommendation thread for people who haven't seen the movie yet. If you have a suggestion for a future recommendation, please post here with it!
