Why did the movie Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping (2016) flop?

Hello redditors,

About 4 years ago, a film titled Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping was released to theaters. The film starred Andy Samberg and also featured Sarah Silverman, Maya Rudolph, and Tim Meadows. Basically, the movie was created by The Lonely Island, and was a mockumentary on the pop-star lifestyle.

The film flopped commercially, but I am somewhat surprised it flopped, given the fact that it had massive promo and about 40 celebrity cameos, give or take, from popular people at the time it was released. Critics also liked the movie, it received good reviews for the most part from fans as well.

Personally, I thought it was hilarious, I haven't seen it in a while, but I was reminded of it just recently. Is this film overlooked? Why do you think it flopped given the fact that there were so many popular celebrities in it, and that it was a decent flick with a lot of promotion?
