Found this in a YouTube comment and I think it's the best I've seen anyone describe this lovely movie! The full comment was:

"My favourite explanation of the Big Lebowski is "it's a movie where none of the characters can agree on which genre the movie is". So the Dude thinks it's a stoner comedy, Walter thinks it's a Rambo-type war flick, Bunny thinks it's a porno, Maude thinks it's an avant-garde art film... etc. "
