The Mitchells vs The Machines is like a modern day Goofy Movie

A kid excited about an upcoming event with friends, but dad, fearing family is growing apart, forces a surprise road trip to bond with the kid; kid's dishonest act changes destination of the trip, leading to dad feeling betrayed when he learns; in crisis, kid saves the day employing a special technique (The Perfect Cast vs stick shift lesson) that dad had attempted to teach to the disinterested kid; family ends up closer in the end.
