Is poor communication the ultimate plot device?

So many harmful situations avoided if there was clear and up front communication. Almost every rom com is a drastic reaction to a misunderstanding. Same with horror films and most action adventures. Even dramas are getting in on the action.

Is this lazy writing or generally accepted as part of the suspension of disbelief?

Or am i just way off on all of this lol
