The IATSE strike will have a much bigger effect than the Writer’s Guild strike

The 2007-2008 writers strike that lasted just over four months had a pretty sizable impact with talk shows being stopped, movies being rescheduled, altered or ruined by it (i.e. Quantum of Solace ), and rewrite shows . This effect will be 10 fold if the IATSE votes to strike for the first time ever. It’s hard to understate what will happen if the IATSE strikes, some of the people who are under the IATSE banner include editors, cinematographers, production assistants, hair and makeup, technicians, animators, scenic and concept artists, and many more. That is just in the filmed section of the Union, they also do all the corresponding jobs in the stage and concert world. The stage locals will most likely not be a part of the strike unless shit truly hits the fan (which would most likely lead to just about every concert and theater being shut down). The writers strike just caused delays and production problems but an IATSE strike would lead to a complete shut down of the industry as there aren’t any work around for not having someone: behind the camera, editing the film, building the sets, making the visual effects, or doing just about any technical part of the movie or television process.

That being said, we need to support them fully in this effort. They are making reasonable demands for fair treatment such as having a reasonable amount of time between shifts, a reasonable minimum amount of hours worked to have pension benefits, among others.

The nation wide vote to authorize the strike should be taking place in the coming days to determine what will happen.

TL;DR : This strike will uproot the entire film and tv industry, and possibly entertainment as a whole. But it should still be supported.
