First Man (2018) flew under everyone's radar.
It's an immersive, immaculately crafted, satisfyingly old-fashioned film that deserves to become the definitive moon-landing movie.
Ryan Gosling is brilliant and so is Claire Foy. Both of them give fantastic performances.
The editing, score, sound design and cinematography—some of cinema's best. Every shot is perfect. Every single fucking shot. The framing is flawless and the lighting is gorgeous. Going from deliciously grainy 16mm to 35mm and, when we get to the moon, cracking open the widescreen glory of 70mm IMAX. I was gobsmacked. Jaw on the floor type shit.
Yet only $105m at the box office and 7.3 on IMDB? Did I watch the same film as everyone else?
