Is there an actor you can really tell wants to win an Oscar but keeps falling short?

The best example I can think of is Will Smith. He first gets nominated for Best Actor for 2001’s Ali and later in 2006 for The Pursuit of Happiness. Both of these performances were critically acclaimed and it seems Smith has been trying to recapture that magic ever since.

You can tell by the projects he has picked such as Seven Pounds, Concussion, Collateral Beauty, and the upcoming King Richard. None of these movies have received the acclaim (although King Richard hasn’t come out yet) that his other works have received (Collateral Beauty was panned far and wide).

So what other actors do you see going down this path or is Will Smith the only one?

Note: Correct me if I’m wrong, but didn’t the whole #OscarsSoWhite controversy start because Jada Plinkett Smith was upset that her husband didn’t get nominated for Concussion?
