‘The Last Duel’ is pretty good and you shouldn’t sleep on it just because of its box office performance
It’s a historical crime drama told from three different perspectives.
I found this structure realised in a very compelling way. Each character sees themselves in a certain light and this makes the audience question their loyalty at every turn.
The last duel itself was greatly choreographed. It had a strong emotional weight. I wasn’t sure who was going to win. I certainly teared up.
I think Ridely Scott is back in his element after a long time.
It’s not without flaws: cliched dialogues and a slow beginning, but these are quickly surmounted by an immersive atmosphere, great performances, and a tense narrative.
Dune will rightfully eat the conversation this week, but The Last Duel complements it nicely. Watch them both if you can.
