Austin Powers 2 and 3 were peak Year 2000 Hollywood humour

From I remember in the 1997, Austin Powers came out and most people in the UK ignored it. It made a moderate amount of money but was seen as cheesy. It became a cult hit on dvd and TV, since people remembered Wayne's World. But something must have happened between 97 and 99, when Austin Powers 2 was released, because Mike Myers' career must have exploded.

All I knew is that the hype around Austin Powers 2 was MASSIVE. Constant promotion, cameos from Burt Bacharach, Jerry Springer, Woody Harrelson (he was somebody), Soundtrack with Madonna and Lenny Kravitz. It only cost $35 million to make and made $310 million worldwide!

Then, after that you have Austin Powers 3 with Beyonce, double the budget, more bad taste and silly "jokes", cameos from Tom Cruise, Steven Spielberg, Gweneth Paltrow, Quincy Jones, Ozzy Osborne (?) and a soundtrack with Beyonce, Britney Spears and Earth, Wind and Fire and box office of $300 million.

These movies were a very unique Year 2000 phenomenon. You couldn't escape Austin Powers between 1998 and 2004.

But what happened to Mike Myers and comedy on this type of scale? Will we ever see it again?
