Does anyone know why Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen weren’t cast in the Parent Trap?

The movie came out at the height of their childhood fame and Lindsay Lohan was unknown then as this was her breakout role, so I can’t figure out why MK&A weren’t cast instead? It would definitely been easier than the filming of Lindsay playing two people. Has anyone ever read anything on why the twins weren’t cast?
