Mel Brooks Deserves More Respect As A Filmmaker

Whenever you see a list of the great directors who emerged in the 1970s, Mel Brooks name is missing. He didn't make "heavy" movies - just funny ones. He's the true heir to Charlie Chaplin: writing, directing, starring and partially even scoring his own films. His film style could be compared to Frank Capra: completely utilitarian and without pretense. The camera never draws attention to itself - unless he's imitating Alfred Hitchcock. And yet Mel Brooks revolutionized film comedy by being more outrageous than anybody had ever been before.

Mel Brooks is so funny it's easy to overlook that he is a master of all of the aspects of film making.
