After Kim Basinger won the Oscar for "LA Confidential", her career went nowhere. What happened?

Winning the Oscar helped revive Kim Basinger's career, which prior to that, was already struggling. Her last films flopped, the Boxing Helena scandal which cost her the Island and the fact she was already in her 40s and the sex symbol status was beginning.

When she got to play Lynn Bracken and "LA Confidential" came out, the critics went mad. They praised her everywhere and she became the easy front-runner. Winning the Oscar was her night and she looked incredible as a 45 year old woman. Personally, I didn't think she did much in the movie but that was just me.

What should have been an upswing, it became less than that. She didn't come out with anything for the next two years but in 2000, she came out with "I Dreamed of Africa" and "Bless the Child", both flops, and that was that.

What do you think caused her to not take advantage of the hype post win which might have boosted her career?
