Goon (2011) is a perfect comedy movie

For anybody unfamiliar with the movie it's about a small town bouncer whose lacking direction. After a wild fight in the stands during a hockey game he's able to find his purpose in life as a goon on a minor league hockey team. A goom is an enforcer of a team that is supposed to deter & dole out punishment to the opposition.

Without credits this movie is about 88 minutes which is a great run-time for a comedy. That's not to say long comedies are bad, I feel like around 90 minutes is the sweet spot. This movie doesn't have any scenes that feel like they were better left on the cutting room floor or scenes that while funny grind the story to a halt.

The main characters are quickly fleshed out & developed. That applies most to Sean William Scott's Doug, the titular goon. I can't really praise his performance enough. He's most known for such huge vibrant characters like Stifler. Doug is a very restrained performance. He's dimwitted, kind & devoted but can also go completely deadeyed at the drop of a hat unleashing a burst of violence.

None of this nuance comes at the expense of laughs. It's incredibly raunchy & stuffed to the gills with hilarious supporting characters who are pretty quotable. There are plenty of solid physical comedy bits as well.

For anybody curious it's available free with ads on Tubi, Pluto, VUDU, Plex, Redbox & Crackle.
