Despite being a sequel released 35 years after the original, Blade Runner 2049 happens to be one of the most original films I've ever seen.
I just watched Blade Runner 2049, and it absolutely blew my mind in every conceivable way. I didn't know you could make films like this today. It's a rare sequel to an old movie that doesn't just rehash the same plot as the previous one, but tells a completely new story in its universe, and includes new deep themes while expanding on ideas from the original in interesting ways.
It has great coloring and cinematography from Roger Deakins, and mind-blowing VFX that still hold up to this day, and every single frame could work as a desktop background. Plus, it's got slow pacing instead of having non-stop action like so many other modern blockbusters. And it tells a complete story with a beginning, middle, and end, without needing to set up more sequels in the future. It's also nearly 3 hours long, but every scene feels justified.
Ryan Gosling's character is a cool and stoic badass on the outside, but seems to have deeper humanity on the inside. Harrison Ford returns to play another of his classic characters in Deckard, but it seems like he really cares this time. Jared Leto plays a weird character, but it works in the context of the film and it feels like he could exist in the world. Plus, Joi is also a great female character who suits the story well, and Ana de Armas plays her perfectly.
This film is a breath of fresh air for me as someone who rarely watches films besides blockbusters, and it’s everything that film critics, fans, and audiences could ask for. Unfortunately it bombed at the box office because people are stupid and only pay money to see superheroes, Star Wars, and other CGI-heavy sequels.
That said, Denis Villeneuve is a cinematic genius, and his body of work is criminally underrated. Hopefully, his version of Dune is actually successful and cements him in the eyes of moviegoers as the best director working today. This movie's available on HBO Max, so check out Blade Runner 2049 whenever you can!
