The Planet of The Apes Prequel Trilogy is an incredible 3 part character study on leadership, and Andy Serkis should have at least been nominated for an Oscar in his role as Caesar
The trilogy when watched back to back is a such an incredible character study of Caesar and his character arc throughout is awesome to watch. Aside from growing with the character, we see his values change, his morals and principles tested and it’s a great way to understand the difference between a dictator and a leader.
Rise, Is probably the weakest even though it has some incredible moments and built up tension
Dawn, is almost shakespearean and epic with the way it navigates character and reflects humanity
War, is like red dead redemption meets the last of us but with monkeys
The way that they communicate so effectively with the camera and body language really proves their filmmaking mastery, Caesar has such a powerful presence on screen and the way he gains that power is almost entirely due to his relationship with the camera.
Andy Serkis as Caesar deserves an oscar, hands down one of the best performances and the whole trilogy would not stand without his incredible performance. In my opinion, this is where performance capture achieved is true potential of replacing a human with a completely different character while capturing the entire essence of that performer.
-
The CGI is great and still hold up, especially the second and third movies
-
the music is great, and sometimes harkens back to the roots of the franchise and older film scoring styles
-
the acting is top notch
-
the cinematography is excellent
If you’ve never seen them, do yourself a favor and have a planet of the apes prequel trilogy weekend, you will not regret it.
