I know it seems minor, but I really think Spielberg giving Indiana Jones a phobia of snakes added a lot to the character. So many heroes are borderline infallible that seeing one which such a glaring weakness really brought him down to a more human level.
There are a million reasons to love Raiders of the Lost Ark and The Last Crusade and I think this is a big one that people don't fully appreciate.
It might seem like a random little detail that made for a few funny moments but I think it's one of the reasons we all love Indy so much. He may be intelligent, handsome, tough, and a sharpshooter, but when it comes to snakes he might as well be a scared little kid. Little idiosyncrasies like this add a lot in my opinion.
I wish more action/adventure movies gave their characters flaws like this. Like anything good, it leads to a lot of shallow imitations that miss the point and a lot of Indy-esque characters don't have glaring flaws and weaknesses like this. It seems so bizarre that a man who casually goes toe to toe with Nazis and cults and magic artifacts and digs through ruins would be so deathly afraid of snakes and it's this kind of illogic that makes him feel more human.
I've always felt like the difference between a good movie and a great one is in the little details, and this is an example of that.
