Let's talk about running competitions and giveaways in this subreddit and how we can do it better and everyone can enjoy them more.

I've been running competitions and moderating games for this subreddit for a few years now and it's been a lot of fun. I think a lot of people have been thankful for something to do and the possible size of the competitions can get really interesting. Last year we started the Fantasy Movie League and have become one of the top three largest leagues on the entire site, and this past January we held our 3rd Annual Oscar Bingo which had a huge turnout with over 20,000 Bingo cards being generated. In general I enjoy running these and you guys enjoy playing them and everyone always gets whatever prize is promised. That's not really what I'm worried about.

Recently several PR firms have been contacting us about running giveaways in the subreddit. They want to give stuff to our users and use the reddit thread format to run small competitions. The first one was The Revenant giveaway which it seems people had fun with and got 0 reports and very few mild complaints. So when the same guy asks me to do another one but this time with Ride-Along 2, I thought sure why not. This second giveaway had a ton of entries and what I thought was a better question, but the most upvoted comments were all about how this is spam or an ad and the post got reported several times and never broke the threshold of positive upvotes.

Obviously this subreddit isn't as big of a fan of Ride-Along 2 as The Revenant. I knew that and I expected some criticism, and I'd say the criticism was still fairly mild but it was obvious to me that this giveaway bothered some people. And it seems like we are going to get more offers to do these things and that most people want to participate.

So here I am asking what we can do to make these better. We don't have anything in our rules against giveaways, people ask us all the time if they can give away download codes or something in the sub and we always say yes. And I would think if the prizes offered go into the $200+ territory then mod involvement is appreciated to make sure everyone gets their cookies.

Just curious if you could give me your thoughts on the subject as a regular /r/movies user. I think most people like them popping up but maybe there's a way we can execute them better. Maybe more relevant prizes to this sub than an iPad? Maybe a time limit on the sticky? As usual we prefer transparency so if you have any questions or ideas please let us know.

Thanks y'all and enjoy movies responsibly.

If you're in the Fantasy Movie League don't forget to set your lineup tonight! Last week saw the most common Perfect Cinema ever recorded so if you played it chances are you moved up the chain but not by much! Are you playing Keanu or anchoring with Jungle Book?
