In Starship Troopers, The Mormon extremists were completely massacred by the bugs but why were they even on the planet? It's not like they could have converted the bugs.

I was rewatching the movie and the scene with the Mormon extremists came up and it didn't make sense to me why the Mormons would settle in the fringes where the only things they could convert are bugs. Did the book ever mention why they went so far?
