There's two weeks left in the /r/movies Fantasy Movie League! Be sure to set your lineups by this Friday and if you haven't joined yet and want to prep for next season now is a great time to start!
Another interesting season is wrapping up and I, for one, can say thank god because this has been a very middle of the road season for me. Hopefully I can come out in the 60's or 70's with a little luck in the next two weekends. What could I have done to have a better season, you ask? Geeze, I made so many terrible mistakes it's tough to pick just one. I should have known Warcraft would be frontloaded and played it opening weekend. I should have played Finding Dory opening weekend I don't know what the fuck I was thinking not playing that or Secret Life of Pets opening weekend.
Here were some interesting highlights from this season of disappointing blockbusters and high earning kid's movies!
-
Alice Through the Looking Glass pulled a rare feat by being Best Earner two weeks in a row making anyone who played it 9x in 2 weeks big earners
-
Tarzan surprised us all by showing us that we should never doubt live action Disney. Then two months later Pete's Dragon proved that's wrong and there is no metric for this shit.
-
The Shallows' unexpected success opening weekend shows the true power of Shark Week.
-
Warhammer, Suicide Squad, and X-Men: Apocalypse showed us all how frontloaded big franchise movies can be. Play them opening weekend then fuhgettaboutit because they will drop big if they don't have the reviews to hold them up.
-
Speaking of Suicide Squad, for I think the first time ever a big blockbuster movie that was split into three days on FML (Friday, Saturday, Sunday options) was not included in the best performing cinema. Instead, those who saw the potential in maxing out Bad Moms won big that weekend despite Suicide Squad breaking August records.
-
Star Trek Beyond has had a rough go of it despite the solid reviews, having been absent from Perfect Cinema for four weeks.
This week it's a toss up between War Dogs, Kubo and the Two Strings, and Ben Hur as the newcoming anchors. Of course you can always go for Suicide Squad and Sausage Party, although instinct tells me that SS will continue to drop while SP will experience a large drop as well.
Currently there is a 10mil difference between 1st and 2nd and just slightly over 1mil difference between 2nd and 4th. Overall there's a 35mil difference between 1st and 10th and a 12mil difference between 10th and 20th. I've seen crazier things happen so those names can still jumble, especially with two underwhelming weeks of releases coming the big payout will go to those who find the Best Earner!
How's your season going? Where did you go wrong or right?
