What was the best film you saw this week? (08/15/16 - 08/21/16)
The way this works is that you post a review of the best film you saw last week. It doesn't have to be a new release, just any film you have seen over the last seven days that you feel is worth talking about. Here are some rules.
1. Check to see if your favourite film of last week has been posted already. If so, please reply to that comment instead of making a new thread.
2. Please post your favourite film of last week.
3. NO TV SHOWS! Discuss your love for Stranger Things somewhere else.
4. ALWAYS use spoiler tags. Report any comments that spoil recent / little-known films without using the spoiler tag.
5. Comments that only contain the title of the film will be removed!
Here are some examples of good comments from last week's thread:
- Chef. I've seen it so many times but it always puts the biggest smile on my face. If you want a feel good movie, watch Chef. All around great performances- Bobby Cannavale is excellent as always, Jon Favreau is hilarious and super fun to watch, and Robert Downey Jr. makes an appearance that will always be my favorite cameo in any movie. Sofia Vergara also does a great job, and the family dynamic is very grounded and believable. There is no forced third act conflict, no tropes, no bullshit. It's just a fun, gorgeous, lighthearted movie that I will continue to recommend to everybody! Go watch it!
- The Bridge on the River Kwai. Alec Guinness gives one of the all-time great performances as Col. Nicholson, and David Lean is at the height of his powers. The movie centers around the theme of madness, and the attempts of the characters to maintain sanity, pride, and some level of civilization amidst horrifying conditions. I'm never quite sure who to side with in this movie. On the one hand, Nicholson's stubborn refusal to compromise with Saito earns him authority over and respect from his men, and allows them to achieve some measure of dignity. On the other, his blind obsession with building the bridge causes him to lose sight of his larger duties as a soldier and of the war itself. Counterposed to this, William Holden's Commander Shears starts out as the most unprincipled man of the lot. By the end of the movie, he the most level-headed character, even willing to make sacrifices to save others. All told, this movie has a number of interesting character studies. One of my favorite quotes is from the camp doctor, Clipton, who, upon seeing the monomania of both Nicholson and Saito, asks, "Are they both going mad, or am I going mad, or is it the sun?"
- The Raid: Redemption and The Raid 2: Berandal - Holy crap these films are intense and seriously earns some of the "greatest action movies" comments. These two are pretty different in tone so it's up to debate as to which one is the better film. Redemption was a contained, gritty police action movie with martial arts elements, while Berandal was a gang warfare movie with more emphasis on the martial arts. Personally I liked Berandal more, although the story gets a little too complicated, from the prison fights to the hammergirl/bat-man fights to the kitchen fight, the action scenes easily top any scene from Redemption. If you are looking for something to watch, by yourself or with your friends, I seriously recommend The Raid movies.
