What was the best film you saw this week? (08/22/16 - 08/28/16)
The way this works is that you post a review of the best film you saw last week. It doesn't have to be a new release, just any film you have seen over the last seven days that you feel is worth talking about. Here are some rules.
1. Check to see if your favourite film of last week has been posted already. If so, please reply to that comment instead of making a new thread.
2. Please post your favourite film of last week.
3. NO TV SHOWS! Discuss your love for Stranger Things somewhere else.
4. ALWAYS use spoiler tags. Report any comments that spoil recent / little-known films without using the spoiler tag.
5. Comments that only contain the title of the film will be removed!
Here are some examples of good comments from last week's thread:
- Office Space - I know it's something of a favourite on here, and it was one of those movies I should've seen a long time ago (it's been on my PVR for months). Last night I finally pressed play and was immediately hooked. Given it's meme-friendliness, I was really surprised at how cutting it is, and that it isn't an out-and-out slapstick comedy. It was especially poignant for me, as I'm currently working from home as much as possible as my job careers toward redundancy. I really identified with Peter more than I expected to. As the third act got going, I was concerned about whether the story could maintain the sharpness, and I was really impressed with the way Mike Judge avoided the kind of ending that (especially 80s) office business movies are infamous for, such as the heroes ending up rich and on a beach (Trading Places) or owning the company (Secret of my Success), as though financial success is the only kind of success. Ultimately, I can see why it's a cult classic, and I am glad to have finally joined the club.
- Hardcore Henry: I know most people probably dismissed this movie when it came out as just a gimmick(I know I did for a bit) but I thought it was a legitimately fun action movie. Sharlto Copley gives my favorite performance of his since District 9. He plays multiple versions of the same character that for spoilerish reasons I won't say why just in case anyone here wants to check it out, but all the versions are so different and fun and he's giving it his all it made me really impressed with his range. Will it win any awards? No probably not. Is its story anything to write home about? Hell no. But if you're looking for just a good fun time and a movie that has some pretty funny gags in it then you should check out Hardcore Henry.
- Yojimbo, yet another classic by Akira Kurosawa. This story could be described most simply as the definitive cinematic depiction of testosterone. It is about the difficulties entailed with a man maintaining his integrity and sticking to his guns (or in this case, his sword), and there is not a minute wasted in describing his endeavor of fixing a corrupted town the best way he knows how. I could not help but be tickled by how many of the greatest action and cowboy movies of the West were indubitably inspired by the numerous memorable scenes of this one film. Being somewhat fluent in Japanese, I must concede that although the Criterion Collection English subbing was not entirely accurate, it was mostly accurate, quite funny, and respectful of the rough and tough spirit of that time. I can not wait to see Yojimbo's sequel, Sanjuro!
