'The Grey' was a superb survival drama and heartbreaking storytelling.
I went into the movie expecting and knowing nothing except Roger Eberts positive reaction to it. I expected a standard Liam Neeson action flick and got a beautifully told survival story with characters I actually cared about wrapped around a basic monster movie plot.
One thing I immediately saw when I checked out the online reactions to it that people were way way too hard on the movie, treating it as a national geographic nature documentary, pointing out as much innacuracies and pseudo plot-holes as they could find, rather than treating it as what it basically is, a monster movie, horror.
And when I watched it I watched it as exactly that, I immediately thought of the wolves not as accurately portrayed but as a supernatural force of pre-human nature. And combined with the beautiful and meaningful character deaths and actually likeable and well portrayed characters I was completely immersed.
Absolutely did not expect it to be so emotional and to treat its subject matter so sentimental and serious. Fantastic movie, one of Liam Neeson's best performances in my opinion.
