What are some movies that can be assumed to have a darker ending past the ending od the movie itself ?

I recently had the chance of going through an article online about the movie "Whiplash".

The director of the movie stated that if the story went beyond the ending of the movie, Andrew would have ended up dying in his 30's of drug overdose and Fletcher would have considered Andrew's performance even though he got the wrong sheet of music, still a victory for himself.

That just got me thinking, what are some movies which could have a situation like this ? What if the story went on further, and we would not actually see the happy ending itself but rather the dark ending it hoped to hide.
