I noticed that 16 of the top 100 animation movies on Rotten Tomatoes are from 2016

From this list: http://ift.tt/29D5ls8

They are:

  • Zootopia
  • Finding Dory
  • Kubo and the Two Strings
  • Moana
  • Tower
  • Only Yesterday
  • Long Way North
  • April and the Extraordinary World
  • The Red Turtle
  • The Little Prince
  • Miss Hokusai
  • Pete's Dragon
  • Kung Fu Panda 3
  • The Boy and the Beast
  • Sausage Party
  • Phantom Boy

The next most represented years are 2009 and 2010 with 7 movies each, followed by 2012, 2014 and 2015 with 6 movies each.

Obviously, the number of animated films being made in a year is constantly increasing, so it's not an entirely fair comparison, but it still looks like the animated films made in 2016 were especially well-received by critics. It was a great year for animation.

Moreover, movies like Your Name and My Life as a Zucchini will probably join the top 100 once they gather a greater number of reviews. I don't know exactly how Rotten Tomatoes compiles their top 100, but they are not in it at this time, even though they have a score of 97% and 100%, respectively.

Also, I'm not sure why Pete's Dragon is counted but not The Jungle Book. If The Jungle Book was counted, it would have made the list right below Zootopia and above Finding Dory (in terms of Rotten Tomatoes reception).

In comparison, there are 5 2016 movies in the top 100 movies of all time.
