Ryan Gosling surprisingly ended up being my favorite actor of 2016.

Dude had a killer year. LA LA LAND and THE NICE GUYS are two of my favorite films of the year, and he is a big part of why those two films work so well. I knew he could be a charismatic actor, but I always used to find him kind of one-note in movies like Drive and Blue Valentine, even if he did put in good performances in those films. I recently watched Half Nelson and Lars and the Real Girl, and he was definitely very strong in those films too. But in 2016, he really showed off his range as one of the most interesting actors working today IMO. He had absolutely marvelous comedic timing in The Nice Guys and played the luckless loser role very well. In La La Land, he was able to carry a lot of comedy and dramatic heft, as well as holding his own in his singing and dancing. Very excited to see what he does next.

Edit: wait I forgot we already know he's doing the Neil Armstrong biopic next. Excited regardless!
