Same rules apply as the usual Sunday threads even though this one is for the whole year. Also, since we already have a thread for the best films of 2016, try to keep the recent films to a minimum!
1. Check to see if your favourite film has been posted already. If so, please reply to that comment instead of making a new thread.
2. Please post your favourite film of the year.
3. NO TV SHOWS!
4. ALWAYS use spoiler tags. Report any comments that spoil recent / little-known films (e.g. Rogue One) without using the spoiler tag.
5. Comments that only contain the title of the film will be removed!
Here are a few great comments from last week's thread:

Sing. The trailers made me think that this was going to be terrible, but i actually came out of the movie pleasantly surprised. I really liked the characters and i was rooting for them throughout, they felt surprisingly well rounded for an animated movie with an ensemble cast. The plot was also pretty fun. I think they did an excellent job balancing out each characters arc and connecting them all in a satisfying way. One thing i thought would be terrible from the trailers was the use of modern pop songs in the movie, but i actually ended up not minding them so much. The voice actors were actually pretty good singers, and put a decent amount of twist on the songs they covered. Another thing i thought would be terrible was the humor, and while there was 1 or 2 cringeworthy jokes, the movie actually didn't attempt a lot of jokes and instead focused more on the characters and the story..... a nice surprise. All in all, i expected this movie to be a cringe fest, but it ended up being one of my favorite animated movies of the year. Not exactly on par with Zootopia, but still very enjoyable.

My thoughts on Silence: Read this book back in college and I thought the movie would never come out. Well, I just got back from a screening and I can't stop thinking about it in the way a chef's best dish lingers on your tongue. If you ever wondered where is God when people suffer, or beat your self up for failing to be good, this movie helps make sense of what you're feeling. Apart from the message, the story of a Jesuit priest going to Japan to find a possibly fallen from persecution mentor is fascinating, augmented by every aspect of moviemaking that is shown with mastery including acting, cinematography, production design, editing, and costume. I will be very surprised if it doesn't rack up Oscar nominations. Nor is it inaccessible from self indulgence like so many independent movies, rather it is Hollywood auteur moviemaking that is a relic from before era of the blockbuster and one of its finest. When Scorsese said that cinema is dead, he surely could not mean his own. It's only playing in a few cities now but if you get the chance when it's released wider, I can't recommend Silence enough.

I saw The Nice Guys this past week, and I am utterly blown away. The film, bafflingly advertised as a drama when it was really a hilarious black comedy and crime mystery, felt like a film that came out of the late seventies due to the great job it did in regards to the period detail. The mystery that unravel is quite clever, and it connects it a way I really didn't see coming. The characters were uniformly excellent, with each character having distinct strengths, flaws, and personalities. Many movies treat their characters as empty archetypes to deliver jokes or punches, but here the characters are legitimately interesting in their own right. And every joke just works. Even the best comedies have jokes that fall flat, but here the strength of the writing and characters make even simple gags immensely entertaining while avoiding the pitfalls of movies that try too hard. The action is well filmed, the drama is something we can invest in, the score and soundtrack are on point, and this movie is a new all time favorite for me. An absolute 10/10, I would recommend it to anyone who asks.

Have fun and play nice!
